What is BS 9991?
BS 9991:2024 – Fire safety in the design, management and use of residential buildings – Code of practice sets out recommendations and guidance for managing fire safety in residential buildings.
It takes a structured, risk-based approach, considering fire safety throughout the design, management and use of a building. The standard aims to support the protection of occupants in the event of fire, while also taking into account potential damage to property and nearby buildings or businesses.
What does BS 9991 cover?

Where appropriate, BS 9991 can be used as an alternative approach to the guidance within Approved Document B, provided the overall fire safety objectives and requirements are appropriately addressed.
